| The role of the volunteer | ||
Simply by attending the project you are helping us to financially support the mahouts, their families and elephants enabling them to provide a better level of care than they would be able to without the projects help. You are also raising the community's education and awareness level of the world around them, helping them to speak English and making them more aware of the expectations that western travelers have about the care and upkeep of animals. And this is all before you have started physically helping at the camp and village. A large proportion of your time at the project will obviously be spent with your elephant - riding, showering, cleaning & feeding (constantly!) You will also have the opportunity to help with other tasks around the camp and village - see below - and see a little of the surrounding area and Thai culture |

Additional tasks and activities at the camp If you would like to just sit and relax or laze in a hammock, enjoying the Thai pace of life, in between caring for and training with your elephant - that is fine. If you're feeling a little more energetic these are some of the things that you can get involved with: - Path clearing throughout the camp and village - Construction and building - Tending the vegetable garden - Collecting pineapple, banana & palm leaves & grass to feed the elephants - Distributing information brochures to tourists, travel guides, travel agents & hotels - Preparation of information brochures - Talking to tourists about the project - Selling bananas to tourists to feed the elephants - Manning the donation area - Helping to prepare & cook Thai food with the families If you have a particular interest or expertise in any of the above that you would like to use to help the project please let us know! There are also some activities that you can get involved with that have a small fee to pay: - Making jewellery from elephant tail hair - Learn how to make a hammock (which you can then either take home or on onward travels with you or donate to the camp ) |
