African Elephant
(Loxodonta africana)
Asian elephant

African elephants ears are bigger, reaching over the neck.

Asian elephants are smaller in height: from the shoulder to the ground an Asian elephant is 2-3.5m, an African elephant is 3-4m.

The Asian elephants head is dented in the middle with the appearance of 2 humps. The African elephants head is rounded with no dents.

The African elephant is bigger; weighing 4000-7000kg.The Asian elephant is smaller, at 3000-6000kg.

An Asian elephants lower lip is pointed whilst an African elephant has a rounded lip.

Tusks are found in both male and female African elephants. Only male Asian elephants will grow tusks.

The Asian elephants trunk is smoother and ends with one finger, the African elephants more wrinkled and with two fingers.

An Asian elephant has 4 front toenails and 5 at the back on each foot; an African elephant has one less on each foot.
