Asian elephant

Elephants eat for about 18 hours per day, consuming around 200kg of food each day

Elephants travel at an average speed of 4km per hour and can walk an average of 30km per day depending on terrain

Elephants drink over 70 litres of water per day, taking in 5-10 litres with one suck of their trunks

Asian elephants can carry 600kg on their backs, 150kg on their necks and 800kg with their trunks

Elephants are vegetarians and are the largest consumer of plants in the animal kingdom consuming over 200 different types of plants

An elephant produces around 50kg of dung per day. A lot of information can be gained form the study of an elephants dung, such as the health and sex of the animal

An elephants strongest senses are smell and touch, the weakest sight and hearing. Elephants can smell water from 9km away

Their favourite foods are banana, bamboo and sugarcane but their daily diet is largely made up of pineapple leaves, as this is easily available. They also like pineapples, coconuts, watermelon and some elephants will eat other fruits such as apples

When sick, elephants are found lying down. It is imperative to get them on their feet as soon as possible. If an elephant is found sleeping standing up during the day it is a sign that there is something medically wrong

Elephants only sleep for 3 - 4 hours at a time, usually between the hours of 11pm - 3am, lying down for only 45 minutes at a time or else they risk crushing their internal organs
