Asian elephant

Fully-grown elephants weigh between 2 ½ - 3 ½ tonnes.

Elephants are between 2 - 3 metres high from the highest point of the shoulders to the ground.

There are no sweat glands on the elephants skin but its skin is twice the size it needs to be, creating a natural cooling system

Asian elephants get 6 sets of teeth during their lifetime, with the last set at 45 yrs old

An elephant has 4 front toenails and 5 back toenails on each foot. If an elephant has 20 toenails in total it is automatically given to the king as it is considered a special elephant

Elephants are born with a covering of hair, much of which they never lose - elephants are hairy! Their mahouts can make jewellery from the tail hair of their elephants

Male elephants do not always have tusks - females do not have tusks. Males without tusks are known as seedors. Tusks grow at a rate of 1 inch per year
