| Volunteer Information - What should you bring for your time at the project? | ||
Firstly bear in mind that clothes worn whilst working with your elephant are likely to get dirty and wet - you will probably wear 2 sets of clothes the whole time! We recommend that you bring the following: - 3/4 length trousers to wear for riding the elephants - elephants are surprisingly hairy so shorts are not a good idea; you could just bring longer trousers to wear over your shorts for riding your elephant if you're suntan hunting - Flip-flops/thongs - you will ride your elephant barefoot and these are easier to slip on and off - t-shirts (vests/tanks are ok) - At least 1 lightweight long sleeved top - Lightweight rain wear - just like everywhere in the world the weather in Thailand is becoming unpredictable, you may not see rain but if it's small enough we recommend packing it - 1 pair long trousers - to wear at night if the mosquitoes are snacking on you - Trainers/sneakers for walking to the forest - Sun cream - Mosquito repellent (unless you eat hot chillies on a regular basis and look Thai - so they can't see you apparently!) - Sarong (f) or shorts (m) to wear to shower, to fit in with the community and save blushes on the walk from shower to house - only if you're staying at the camp though, you don't need to do this at the guesthouse walking to your ensuite! - Toiletries - some toiletries are available to buy but they may not have your favourite brand - Camera/camcorder - don't forget chargers, spare batteries & memory cards/storage devices! - Torch; in case you need to use the loo at night…again only if you're straying at camp! - Books, games, mp3 players for r&r - you have to have something to do in a hammock other than sleep! - Beach/swimwear - it's not ALL elephants! - Notepad and pen to jot down elephant names, commands and useful Thai phrases - Small rucksack/bag to hold essentials (camera, money etc.) whilst working with the elephants (bags will be safe at the camp but it is advised that you do not carry your passport with you during the day - we are happy to keep this in a safe place for you if you wish) - Copies of Heat and Glamour magazine, Tetley teabags and marmite crisps are also always welcome! On a serious note… It is a legal requirement in Thailand to carry your passport and insurance details with you at all times, however we recommend that you carry a photocopy of each rather than the actual documents when you training with your elephant at the camp. |
