As a volunteer at the elephant mahout project you have two options for accommodation: Staying at the camp - click here to see pictures Guesthouse accommodation - click here to see pictures Staying at the camp you will become completely immersed - and welcomed - into the mahout way of life and community. You will live with the mahouts and their families, eat with them and spend lots of time with them and your elephant. Accommodation is basic but comfortable ask Sam about living at the camp. There is no running hot water so showering involves pouring bowls of water over yourself - thankfully being Thailand the water is never too cold! You will stay in a bamboo and pineapple leaf 'house' sleeping on a mattress on the floor: all houses have electricity so you will have lighting, a fan and be able to charge batteries for cameras and phones etc. There are western toilet facilities at the camp, but remember to bring or buy some toilet tissue at the market! If you are staying at the camp you will experience more of the mahout lifestyle; you will ride your elephant to the forest every evening at sunset and return the next morning at sunrise to ride back to the camp - usually stopping at the nearby lake so that the elephant can have a bathe and a swim - a magical sight. If you are staying at the Guesthouse accommodation you will have more luxury and home comforts; guesthouse accommodation is only 5km from Lake View Elephant Camp and the elephant mahout project. Each morning you will be collected at 8.20am and transferred to the camp to enjoy breakfast with your fellow volunteers. Each room at guesthouse accommodation has a TV and DVD player and they have a free DVD and book library in their lounge. Also in their lounge is a computer with free internet access and a pool table. Staying at the guesthouse you will have the opportunity to join other volunteers on afternoon trips and will have the chance to experience riding your elephant to and from the forest at sunset and sunrise at least once (depending on length of stay) We are flexible with accommodation choices - if you first choose to stay at guesthouse accommodation then wish to stay at the camp we are happy to change your accommodation (if available and subject to cancellation fees) and the opposite applies: if you originally stay at the camp but wish to move to guesthouse accommodation we will make every endeavor to accommodate you, just ask! |
